OPD Officer Paul Latschar

OPD Officer Paul Latschar

Officer Paul Latschar of Omaha Police Departments Gang Unit was shot on a routine traffic stop last night.  Last report was he was in critical condition, but improving. Ironically he was shot on the anniversary date of the death of Jimmy Wilson Jr, an officer shot and killed just two miles away 13 years ago.

Having been married to a police officer for 5 years I can only imagine what his family is going through.

My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family, as well as all of the other officers on the department. The fellowship of the law enforcement field has never ceased to amaze me. This extends to the families of those that wear uniforms as well. If anyone would like to leave thoughts, comments, prayers, wishes here with my post, feel free to submit them. I will approve all of them as long as they are not done in poor taste.

Godspeed Paul.

For the rest of you wearing the badge out there, Be Safe.

As a Deputy in training, I know that there is no such thing as a “routine traffic stop”, this is merely a term used by the media. Here at the Law Enforcement Training Center, we had a speaker come in and retell the horrifying experience of being shot by a maniac that he pulled over for a traffic violation. Some might think it’s a nit-picky grammar discussion, but I’d like to think there’s a little more to it.

I have to agree with you. When I originally wrote this, it was before the more intricate details came out as to how everything happened. Now that the actual story has been released, it was not a routine stop. Paul was stopping a vehicle that was being driven by a known gang member who he remembered had a suspended license. A traffic stop was initiated to question the driver as to why he was driving. I appreciate your comment. Thank you for stopping by, and as always, Be Safe when you get out there.
